Canberra Protest

Some things just can't afford to wait. With the Australian apiary industry and ultimately all other food industries that rely on bees, under threat from an incursion of Asian Honey Bee Java Strain (which is a varroa host), it was time to join the respectful protest outside parliament house to try and get the decision to stop the funding into it's eradication reversed.

Bee keepers from all over Australia converged on Canberra in the dark hours of early morning to set up tables and displays with honey, fruit and veg in an effort to show what would be affected should the Asian Honey Bee be allowed to take over.

Led by Jodie Goldsworthy from Beechworth Honey a breakfast was also laid on inside parliament house so that politicians arriving for the day could discuss the issue with bee-keepers and experts on the matter including Max Whitten. details

Honey ride

With the help of local bicycle groups Brimbank Bug and Yarra Bug and other local volunteer cyclists we were able to get the riders we needed to pedal our fleet of cargo bikes laden with bees to the newly opened Quang Minh site in time for the start of the season. Despite a rainy first day of Spring there were still smiles from our volunteer riders. Thanks to Yarra Bug radio on 3CR for putting out the call.

hand cut lables

Local bike shop Vern Smith Cycles who made our bicycle rickshaw (or bee cab as we like to call it) gave over his store for the morning as riders from all over melbourne converged for a spot of brekkie before pedalling off in convoy shifting half a million bees to a new site at a Buddhist Temple. A last minute shortfall in transport was taken care of by Peter Santos from Christiana Bikes who lent 3 of his cargo bikes for the day.
